Types of Colostomy

Temporary Colostomy

Having a temporary colostomy allows the lower portion of the colon to rest or heal. You may have one or even two openings. If this is the case, then one of the openings will only discharge mucus).

Permanent Colostomy

A permanent colostomy usually involves the loss of part of your colon. the part of the colon beyond the Ostomy is no longer functional. The end of the remaining colon is brought to the abdominal wall to form the stoma.

Ascending Colostomy

Ascending Colostomy

Ouput is in liquid, or semi-liquid form. It is rich in digestive enzymes but irritating to the skin around the stoma.

Transverse Colostomy

Traverse Colostomy

Output is usually liquid to semi-formed, since digestive enzyme content decreases the further the stoma is placed to the left of the traverse colon.

Descending Colostomy

Descending Colostomy

Output is semi-formed to formed, as much of the water is absorbed as the waste has moved through the ascending and traverse colons.

Sigmoid Colostomy

Sigmoid Colostomy

Output has a natural, formed consistency, as the water is absorbed as the waste has passed through the remaining part of the bowel.
