The Closed Link System

The Closed Link System

It is best to avoid disconnecting your leg bag too often as it can allow bacteria to get into the catheter and then into your bladder. This can result in urinary tract infections (UTIs) or other problems.

During the Day

The catheter should be connected to a leg bag or catheter valve and stay connected to the catheter for 5-7 days until it is time to replace your leg bag or valve with a new one (unless the bag or catheter valve becomes soiled).

During the Night

The catheter should remain connected to the leg bag or catheter valve during the night. Connect the night drainage bag directly to the leg bag or catheter valve and fully open the tap to allow urine to drain throughout the night. In the morning close the tap of the leg bag or catheter valve, remove empty and dispose of the overnight bag and return to the day system.
