What can I eat? Will I need to change my diet?

You can eat whatever you want because ostomy surgery does not affect your eating habits, but you must chew your food well and drink plenty of fluids.

Some foods may increase gases which you should avoid/decrease such as:

  • cabbage
  • cauliflower
  • spinach
  • potatoes
  • sweetcorn
  • peas
  • green beans
  • baked beans
  • onions
  • garlic
  • cucumber
  • eggs
  • milk
  • melons
  • cantaloupe
  • sugar
  • sweets
  • sugary drinks
  • Smoking and chewing gum can also increase gases.


What will help prevent gas?

If you suffer from excessive gas, you can try taking some of the following to break it up:

  • Charcoal tablets
  • Peppermint or Fennel Tea
  • Yogurt


Alcoholic Drinks

You can still drink alcohol as long as it does not counter any medication you are on. Be aware that Beer can increase gas
